HSC YEARLY SUCCESS PROGRAM

COURSE OUTLINE

Learn ahead in Year 12 for an ATAR advantage and use school as revision!

Acing the HSC requires commitment and dedication, and we can help you simplify the process of targeting your study where it’s needed the most.

The Year 12 HSC Yearly Success Program is a strictly syllabus-focused program that teaches concepts from first principles to provide students with a deep understanding of the course content, rather than relying on ‘superficial’ rote learning or memorisation techniques. Our razor-sharp, syllabus-specific approach also provides an exam-orientated set of strategies to maximise students’ marks in their school assessments and final trial and HSC exams.

The Talent 100 teaching style is unique in its focus on improving our students’ examination scores. Our courses have been carefully designed to be exam relevant so students can be confident their efforts will translate into higher marks.

We have the most comprehensive set of notes in NSW, developed by PhD Academics, Masters-qualified teachers, subject matter experts and top state ranking STEM undergraduate university Mentors.

Talent 100 teaches perfect HSC exam technique, with weekly practice exam-style homework marked with feedback. We instil a unique understanding of scaling so you can strategise where your efforts should be placed.

We combine dynamic classroom learning with personalised tutorials (the best of both worlds) from Talent 100 Mentors (teachers and tutors) who have been in your shoes and mastered their HSC. We don’t leave anything to chance! Our course programs prepare you for your exams well in advance to help reduce any pressure before and during your final HSC weeks.

Year 12 XXX Course Overview

The HSC Chemistry course allows students to take the foundation that was built in the Preliminary course and apply it to the building of knowledge and understanding for the HSC examination. Concepts become more complex as the course explores ideas like polymers and the theories behind phenomena such as oxidation and reduction, equilibrium, the chemistry of acids and bases and stoichiometry.

A student in Band 6 in Chemistry needs to not only demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of the concepts of the course but also can display an outstanding ability to describe and explain physics concepts and to apply the concepts to unfamiliar situations. They need to be capable of applying a high level of critical thinking to develop solutions to multi-step problems through their ability to analyse, evaluate and extrapolate chemical data effectively. They must be able to demonstrate a high level ability to design an experimental procedure coupled with the ability to identify complex relationships, quantify explanations and descriptions and synthesise information to draw conclusions. Finally the ability to communicate succinctly, logically and sequentially using a variety of scientific formats, especially chemical equations, is critical to answering questions and demonstrating understanding in exam situations.

At Talent-100, we prepare all students to achieve at the Band 6 level. To do this, we ensure that students are provided with a full and thorough set of notes that can be used as both a reference and a supplement to the content presented at school. This provides a complete coverage of all the required knowledge which is then explained in class to develop a deep understanding for each individual student. The use of HSC style questions actively extends a student’s understanding as well as providing the development of essential question response skills that are necessary in the HSC. There are dedicated lessons to target all the mandatory practicals so that students have a working understanding of the relevant experimental design and the information required to satisfy all areas that require secondary sources. All of this is then brought together and consolidated through weekly homework pertaining to the most recent lesson. In the final term, the Exam Excellence Program provides weekly practise of sitting the HSC exam followed by an exam review session in class highlighting areas of strength and weakness in the lead up to the final exam.

This combined approach allows us to fully prepare your child to maximise their potential and best prepare them for HSC and tertiary study.

The HSC Physics course allows students to take the foundation that was built in the Preliminary course and apply it to the building of knowledge and understanding for the HSC examination. Study the demanding HSC topics in as much depth and detail as possible, then prepare for the HSC by working systematically through a large number of practice exams.

Extension 2 students study the 2-unit topics, as well as the additional Extension 1 and Extension 2 topics. The Extension 2 topics are designed to challenge even the best students. There is a greater priority on mathematical logic and proof, as well as some more sophisticated applications of mathematics in the physical world. For example, in mechanics, a student is required to resolve forces before an equation of motion can be determined. The topic on complex numbers is completely different to any previous high school topic, and contains some very abstract and interesting geometrical concepts. One of the rewards for students who finish in the top 60% to 70% of the candidature is the very favourable weighting of the 4 units of mathematics towards the ATAR calculation.

We aim to equip as many of our students as possible to score Band E4 in the extension courses. There is very strong competition for top band results. In order to obtain them a student must have considerable natural ability, possess a strong work ethic and be mentally strong enough to cope with the pressure of assessment tasks and examinations. We ensure that our students are supported and encouraged to explore their full potential. They are guided through, and experience for themselves, such an enormous variety of questions that they develop confidence in their ability to succeed. We also strive to inspire our students so that they appreciate the inherent beauty of mathematics, and as a consequence thoroughly enjoy the intellectual challenges presented by their Year 12 studies.

Talent 100 Maths Programs are led by and overseen by David Sadler, co-author of x4 Cambridge University Text Maths Books. David taught Mathematics at Sydney Grammar for 36 years and holds a Bachelor of Science majoring in Pure Mathematics and Computer Science at UNSW, a Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics at USYD and a Diploma of Education at USYD.

Study the demanding HSC topics in as much depth and detail as possible, then prepare for the HSC by working systematically through a large number of practice exams.

Extension 1 students study the 2-unit topics in greater depth, and they also study 7 additional, challenging extension topics. These provide students with a solid foundation for university courses involving mathematics, such as the sciences, engineering and computer programming. The extension topics are quite a significant step up from the 2-unit topics, so considerable natural ability and a strong work ethic are essential prerequisites. However, the rewards are also significant. These include a greater understanding of how mathematics is used to solve an amazing variety of problems in the physical world, and also a deeper appreciation of the elegance of mathematical ideas and proof.

Study the demanding HSC topics in as much depth and detail as possible, then prepare for the HSC by working systematically through a large number of practice exams.

The 2-unit Advanced Mathematics course provides students with an excellent introduction to calculus and its many applications. The development of calculus in the 17th and 18th centuries is one of the greatest achievements of humanity, and it underpinned the industrial revolution of the 19th century. The course also contains an introduction to discrete mathematics, with topics on sequences and series, and applications to finance. Discrete mathematics is fundamental to the development of today's amazing technology.

Economics is, in many respects, one of the most challenging and rewarding HSC courses students can choose. It places a unique emphasis on practical real-world outcomes such as knowledge of economic trends and recent policy, typically including a major assessment on the current year’s Federal Budget. Students must combine a technical knowledge of the course theory with problem solving, creative and communication skills, and they are often required to synthesise ideas and theory from different sources to reach their own conclusions.
Our HSC Economics course is not only predicated on equipping students with the means to understand and apply the theoretical concepts in a concise and detailed manner; it also places strong emphasis on enabling students to grasp the more difficult practical and extension elements of the course, which are essential to scoring the highest marks. Through exam-style homework and specially designed activities, there is also a strong focus on applying ideas flexibly and creatively including by reference to recent economic trends, policies and graphical models, all of which are rarely covered in depth at school.
Furthermore, our state-ranking Mentors place a unique emphasis on an innovative, discursive approach to teaching Economics, which often involves evaluating government policy and analysing recent economic news. In this sense, we teach students to develop different perspectives and a more critical and creative approach that allows them to uniquely distinguish themselves from other students in the context of exams and assessments.

A student in Band 6 in Biology needs to not only demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of the concepts of the course but also can display an extensive understanding of the historical development of biological concepts, their applications and implications for society and the environment, and the future directions of biological research. They need to be capable of applying a high level of critical thinking to develop solutions to multi-step problems through their ability to analyse, evaluate and extrapolate data effectively. They must be able to demonstrate a high level ability to design an experimental procedure using appropriate technologies and incorporating the thorough knowledge of the use of a control, variables and repetition to solve biological problems. This then needs to couple with the ability to identify complex relationships, quantify explanations and descriptions and synthesise information to draw conclusions. Finally the ability to communicate succinctly using precise biological terms extensively and correctly in a wide range of contexts is critical to answering questions and demonstrating understanding in exam situations.

Learn and practice every key concept and response-writing skill of HSC English to build Band 6 answers for each section of the exams. HSC English tutoring with Talent 100 can help you reach your full ATAR potential.

Achieving a Band 6 in HSC English requires students to know exactly what the syllabus expects of them in each section of Papers 1 and 2, and the ability to offer a distinctive, detailed response to each question based on personal understanding. While some schools offer material focused on understanding these syllabus fundamentals, students tend to lack the detailed feedback and guidance they need most in order to demonstrate this understanding in their use of language and discussion of texts. Each unit of our HSC course mirrors the sections of the exams so that students become practised with exactly the kinds of questions they will face, allowing them to become highly practised in progressively building detailed and coherent written responses that can be successfully adapted to any exam. Our HSC English tutors will also provide you with HSC English past papers to help you practise your exam-writing skills with a wide variety of potential questions. It is through this systematic and personal approach, combined with ongoing feedback and refinement of written answers, that students achieve a level of work and results that they never felt capable of before.

Talent 100 Advanced English Programs are led by and overseen by Dr Tim Hanna. Dr. Tim Hanna is Talent 100’s is Head of English and holds a:

- Ph.D. in English Literature and Creative Writing (UNSW) B.A.
- First Class Honours and University Medal (USyd)
- The Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (UNSW)

What Is The Fast Forward Program?

In a typical Talent 100 termly class, Mentors will spend 2.5 hours a week going through the theory and 30 minutes on homework. At the end of each module, students take an examination and review, totalling 6 hours throughout the term. Hence, a typical 10-week term is comprised of about 20 hours of theory and 10 hours of examination* and homework review. Fast Forward students will study the theory booklets of the course and sit the examination in the holidays preceding the term. These students then use the term to REVISE the content, rather than learning it for the first time.

The Fast Forward Program is for any student who is:

  • Doing three subjects at Talent 100, as it will reduce their weekly commitment from 9 hours to approx. 4 hours
  • Prepared and motivated to invest their time in the holidays in order to advance their learning
  • In Year 11 and has completed the Headstart course, OR is in Year 12 and has completed the introductory course

It allows me to learn the whole term’s material in the holidays, which helps me manage my time more effectively… and helps me get ahead in school.

Susie Lauer, Pymble Ladies’ College.

Benefits

Flexibility and Time Management

By investing time in the holidays to study the course, the student reduces their weekly time commitment during the term.

Efficient and structured learning in the holidays

The Fast Forward Program helps students utilise their free time in the holidays effectively in a structured and enjoyable learning environment.

Competitive advantage

Revise The Term For An ATAR Advantage

The Marks Maximiser Program (MMP) is an intensive revision program that takes place during the July School Holidays to help Year 12 students prepare for their final Trial and HSC exams. These two exams collectively count for about 70% of your final HSC mark, so it is important to do well in these exams.

What Is The Marks Maximiser Program?

The MMP provides a concise, comprehensive and effective method of revision. We review every dot point in the syllabus in a question format. Our Mentors show students exactly how to answer the questions with sample solutions and marking guidelines from the top state ranking students. So you’ll know what it takes to score FULL MARKS.

Although many places offer 10-12 hr revision courses, we believe this is not sufficient to score the best marks. Talent 100’s Marks Maximiser Program will completely prepare you for your exams, and while it is always results-focused, it is taught in a fun and interactive environment.

All programs come with a 150-200 page* workbook that contains a concise summary of the syllabus, as well as HSC and ttrial style questions – an indispensable study guide. Our teaching methods will help you consolidate your understanding, and most importantly show you how to score FULL MARKS.

Key Features

  • Complete review of the
    theory and syllabus
  • Provides comprehensive
    practice with exam-style
    questions
  • Highlights common pitfalls
    and ways to eliminate costly,
    careless and unnecessary
    mistakes
  • Shows students how to get
    FULL marks in harder
    questions (5, 6, 7 marks), by
    providing model answers
    from students who came 1st
    in State.

*Note: Workbook size depends on subject

TALENT TIP

Taking both the Exam Excellence and Marks Maximiser programs will ensure your preparedness for the HSC. You will understand the THEORY to a fulls marks standard and have optimised exam technique to score a personal best in the final exam.

TOP STATE RANKING HSC
STUDENTS

What Is The Exam Excellence Program?

The purpose of the Exam Excellence Program (EXP) is to ensure students perform at their peak when sitting the final HSC exam, so as not to lose unnecessary marks due to:

  • Exam pressure
  • Lack of exam style exposure and familiarity with questions
  • Poor time management
  • Careless mistakes
  • Being ‘stumped’ by a difficult question

EXP answers the question, “How would I go in the exam if I took it today?” By identifying the types of mistakes students make during mock exams, EXP will give students the opportunity to address them before the real thing.

EXP consists of 6-10 weeks* of HSC-style examinations conducted under HSC exam conditions, marked in accordance with Board of Studies style guidelines. Each week, students will sit the the exam and attend a review session in which one of our Mentors will go through every question, providing students sample solutions and marking guides that have been prepared by Talent 100’s top state ranking Mentors.

At this stage of Year 12, it’s important that students have a practical understanding of how to perform under exam conditions. The EXP program gives students real time feedback in advance of the HSC exams as to the types of mistakes they may make under exam conditions.

Key Features

  • Compose perfect answers,
    with answers supplied by
    top state ranking Mentors
    for Mathematics Ext 1 & 2,
Physics and Chemistry, Biology, English and
    Economics.
  • Tackle harder questions
    (“curve balls”) to ensure
    there are no surprises in
    the final exams

The final HSC exam marks
have the largest influence on
subject marks & subsequent
ATAR. After 6-10 sets of exams,
EXP students will know their
weaknesses, eliminate them
and ensure they are well and
truly prepared for the HSC.

TALENT TIP

Taking both the Exam Excellence and Marks Maximiser programs will ensure you will be totally prepared for the HSC. You will understand the theory to a fulls marks standard and have optimised EXAM TECHNIQUE to score a personal best in the final exam

FAQs

There are many places where you can get good tuition for HSC subjects. However, Talent 100 is unique in its approach to results-focused teaching and learning. The results speak for themselves with Talent 100 students topping the state every year since we were founded.

At Talent 100, we help students study smarter, not harder, in the lead up to and during their HSC. We teach you exactly what you need to know in order to score top marks, and we’ll help you be exam-ready when it counts because our course programs are designed to help you prepare for exams all year round.

We have a very strong results focus that seeks to maximise ATARs. Rather than encouraging you to devote your energy evenly across all your subjects, we show you how to allocate your time efficiently to the higher-scaling subjects that need more attention. Acing the HSC is about picking your battles, not just winning them.

We help our students to dramatically improve their marks through a two-tier system of teaching.

In our in-centre, interactive small group classes, we’ll familiarise you with the key theory, focusing on building a deep conceptual understanding from first principles, rather than through memorisation. A Talent 100 Mentor (teacher or tutor) explains the theory, working through typical HSC questions, before allowing you to reinforce what you learnt with further questions.

In an interactive and personalised tutorial, a Talent 100 Mentor will provide directed and individual feedback to you (and up to three other students) if you require help with your school or Talent 100 work.

Overall, our teaching system combines the best of a competitive class environment with the personal attention and care of having a private tutor.

At Talent 100, we call all of our teachers and tutors ‘Mentors’, because they do so much more than simply teach content. They guide our students to HSC success year after year.

The Talent 100 Academic Team comprehensively understands the HSC system and how to succeed in it because almost all of our Mentors have topped the state or achieved a state rank in their area of subject matter expertise. Most have scored an ATAR above 99.85 or have achieved unparalleled academic or teaching success. Talent 100 Mentors will show you in exacting detail what it takes to succeed in each subject.

Talent 100 teachers will help you maximise your ATAR through their:

  • Outstanding academic merit – Getting the very best marks requires having detailed and specific knowledge of the HSC syllabus. Talent 100 Mentors have achieved unparalleled success in the HSC and can use their specific knowledge to help you.
  • Effective communication and strong leadership skills – This ensures the theory can be taught to you in a way you will understand.
  • Passion for teaching and improving your marks – They understand how significant your HSC is in influencing your university course options and, ultimately, your career path, so they are committed to doing whatever it takes to get you there.

Talent 100’s Academic Team is led by our Founder, Richard Chua, and consists of:

  • David Sadler, our Head of Maths and co-author of Cambridge University maths textbooks
  • Phd academics and university medalists
  • Masters-qualified teachers
  • A second to none undergraduate team, featuring top state ranking Mentors (tutors) who have topped the state in the HSC every year from 2007 to 2015 in Maths, Advanced English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Economics.

Our Academic Team has together translated their knowledge and results into a practical high-quality set of notes that covers everything you need to know for the exams in the ideal level of detail.

The notes guide you through the syllabus in a step-by-step structure that is easy to understand and follow. They are also comprehensively designed to make your study time efficient. For example, in Physics and Chemistry, we include write-ups of all practicals with a discussion of reliability, validity and accuracy. This ensures you are able to answer questions, even if your practicals did not go as planned.

Effectively, our system of notes and teaching allows you to leverage the collective expertise of the HSC’s top performers.
