Meet our Chatswood Student: Mel

Meet Our Talent 100 Students: Mel Shishido (Year 12) | Talent 100

While you’re usually used to our staff and mentor blogs, we’ve decided to flip the switch so you can find out more about the students who actually study at Talent 100.

We can share their unique personalities and passions both in and outside of our classrooms.

This week we’ve been chatting to Mel who is currently in Year 12, and will be sitting the HSC next month!

Name: Mel Shishido

When did you join Talent 100? Term 3, 2018

Which year are you currently in? Year 12

Which Talent 100 centre do you study in? Chatswood

Subjects taken at Talent 100: Chemistry, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2

What’s the best part about studying at Talent 100?

The classes extend on the content taught at school, and allow us to delve deeper into the concepts and theories for a much broader understanding and application. The small class sizes and mazing mentors allow us to ask lots of questions, and makes it a more personalised experience that ensures we get what we need.

Also, the other students and staff, and the joy of meeting new people. Talent 100 has given me the opportunity to expand my social sphere and make some wonderful new friends.

Have you tried our holiday programs? If so, how did they benefit your learning?

I attended the Mathematics Extension 2 Exam Preparation course in July, and I have attended multiple HSC English courses. The holiday programs are great because they allow you to sit down and focus on one subject, and dedicate your time to nailing it.

The English course in particular was helpful in revising all modules, getting feedback, and consolidating my knowledge before I got distracted by other subjects.

Can you share your number one study tip?

Don’t cram! Build up your studying and knowledge over the year. However, also try not to burn out. Pace yourself. Set up a study schedule. Moderation is key!

What’s a piece of advice you would give to other students?

Start early. Spend Year 11 establishing a study system that works for you, use the time to trial different methods and classes, so that when Year 12 hits you’re ready to go.

What are your career aspirations after completing high school?

Right now, I’m thinking about aerospace engineering or chemical engineering, but I’m keeping an open mind for other areas I’ll be exposed to at university.

What’s your hidden talent/something we might not know about you?

This is random, but I can sleep at any time. Literally, I can just turn off any stress and just calm down. It has definitely come in handy this year!

If you could describe Talent 100 in one word, what would it be?

Inspiring. Talent 100 encourages you to push your limits.

Best of luck to Mel and our other Year 12 students sitting the HSC this year!
