Name: Danielle Cheung

School: Pymble Ladies College (PLC)

Now you have finished the HSC, what is your number 1 tip for students?

My number-one study tip would be to have your friends to peer-mark your essays and responses – they can be a lot more detailed and personal than teacher comments

What did you gain out of tutoring and how would you describe your experience at Talent?

Through Talent 100, I was aiming to supplement my economics with extra resources that my school wasn’t able to provide – Talent was definitely able to help with this with plenty of sample essays, statistics, and updates on current economic news. Wherever I had trouble understanding a particular concept or style of exam question, my mentor was always available to explain it in a concise and simple way.

The learning environment at Talent 100 is super accommodating; in my economics class, my mentor is always happy to go over any blind spots in our knowledge – he also gives us more resources than we could ever need, like powerpoints and essay templates and topic cut-downs, to really cover everyone’s preferred learning styles and make sure we know what direction we should take in our study. The best part is definitely the availability of feedback – it felt great to know that I could send anything, essays, practice papers, to my mentor and have in-depth feedback within a few days.

Who was your mentor and how did they help you?

Roland. My mentor’s teaching style mainly focused on exam questions, and being familiar with all the types of multiple choice and essay questions that could be asked; and so every lesson we’d have time designated to practising with past questions. I think this has been an effective way to show us where marks are easily lost, and it’s helped me identify exactly which type of questions I have trouble with.

My mentor and classmates fostered a really inviting learning environment that made difficult economic concepts easier to approach. There was never any hesitation to ask questions or revise over previous topics – by learning with my peers, I think I was able to properly consolidate my knowledge and refine my writing style.

What are you planning to study in the future?

I’m aiming to study law at university and hopefully pursue a career path in the legal field after graduation, though nothing is set in stone yet. As a uni student, I’d like to work as an intern in a law firm to gain experience and a better understanding of the workplace environment.

How would you describe your Talent experience in a few words?

If I could describe Talent in one word it would be supportive – the teachers are always happy to accommodate your learning habits to help you achieve your best results.
