Tips on how to get a Band 6 in HSC Physics
With the HSC Examinations just around the corner, we tackle some of the most popular queries students like you have.
One of which we see year after year is how to study better for the Physics HSC Exam – and with good reason! Physics is one of those subjects where there’s so much content to learn, including theories and processes as well.
We show you how you can maximise your time and get a Band 6 in HSC Physics:
Start from the syllabus
Just like we’ve referenced in our previous blog posts about smashing the Biology and Chemistry papers, we highly recommend that the Physics Syllabus from NESA should also be your bible. It will outline everything you need to know, including all the content you will cover throughout the entire year.
When in doubt, always cross reference everything with the content available in the HSC Physics Syllabus. Keep a close eye on the syllabus, and don’t try to over analyse all of the dot points either.
Teach someone else
The best way to determine whether you understand the content, is always to teach it to someone else! If you don’t have a friend or family member who is willing to listen, the second best technique is to record yourself giving a lesson. You can run through the lesson at your own pace, and listening back to the recording to see what your strengths and weaknesses are.
YouTube is your friend
While we’re on the topic of teaching aids, watching Physics videos on YouTube or podcasts is another fantastic way to learn while you’re on-the-go. We’ll also be releasing a Physics Teaching Series over the next few months (which replicates our Talent Teaching Series Preliminary Chemistry Playlist) hosted by Dr Nikhil Vasan! This works especially well if you’re a visual learner, and find it easier to memorise content in the form of images, graphs and tables.

Create weekly study notes
This is easier to master if you’re in Year 11 rather than in Year 12, but we really don’t recommend leaving your notes to pile up. Take a small chunk out of your week and revise your notes when they’re still fresh in your brain.
Learn the appropriate terminology
As with other science subjects including Biology and Chemistry, you’ll be expect to know all the correct terminology for the entire course. You can’t expect to get full marks in a question if you don’t understand what it’s asking of you! Take the following questions as an example:
Questions from the 2018 Physics HSC Paper
Practice makes perfect
One of the best ways we recommend studying for any type of exam is with past papers. Not only are you getting into the right state of mind for the HSC, but you’re actively answering questions in exam-style formats which will only help you get better.
Don’t neglect your study notes
Although we don’t recommend that you should solely rely on past HSC papers. You should be using this in combination with your study notes to ensure that you know the core features of each topic, and are then comfortable enough to answer exam-style questions about it.
Take a holiday course
Use the StuVac to your full advantage and sign up today to our Physics EXP course taking place during the October School Holidays. This is your last chance to prep before the HSC, and make sure that you have covered all the syllabus dot points before sitting the final exam.
